Lake Merced!!! "Kind of miserable" 🤣🤣 My most formative young sporting years were spent circling the lake. That's where we had our summer cross country practices. They didn't even mention Lake Merced in that article you linked, but I knew. I knew.
I'm really enjoying the newsletter. Keep up the good work. Thanks to Hoka. The best new mom example I can think of (better than Serena, actually) is Kim Clijsters, who won three tennis majors not so long after giving birth.
Regarding how some Kona slots are rolling down so much, it would be interesting to know why (which I realize would likely mean interviewing each person that passed on the slot). Is it budget? They're already qualified? Out of vacation time? Planning pregnancy during October? Don't want to race in Kona's conditions? Have done it one or more times before and done with it?
It sounds, anecdotally, like part of it is just so many spots that they're rolling down past where people expect so people aren't there at awards. But it's also a lot $$ and the sheer expense/time/cost, plus there's still a hesitation (generally speaking) around signing up for races that expensive that far in advance after getting burned so many times the last 3 years.
Kelly - if you're looking for a really cool non-triathlon thing to highlight in the next few newsletters, go take a look at Tegan Phillips. She's attempting the women's record for riding her bike from Cairo to Cape Town. The logistics alone are daunting, not to mention financing and actually riding. She's also a gem of a person and really funny. https://www.instagram.com/teganphillipscomics/
Re: after parties, was Noel at any of them?
I didn't see him, sorry

haha I've only done it for the Christmas Relays and there's something uniquely miserable about sprinting full speed up a false flat in a Santa hat
