Just read your race report. Like you i have done this race at least 5 times because i love Escape from Alcatraz and i love San Francisco. I have had to walk my bike up some of the crazier hills anddefinitely walked up the hills and stairs. In my opinion nothing beats floating for a bit in the bay and looking out at Golden Gate. So, I will oay the ridiculous fee and enjoy myself. This year i feel undertrained so we‘ll see how it goes. Wish me luck!

Well, he is an amateur, it is allowed to be fast as an amateur isn't it? And, the swim was somewhat slow(ish), so not so fast in all disciplines :)

The fact that he was a world class in other sport still makes him an amateur triathlete :)

I have no problem with fast people from other sports racing age-group or former pros racing it. What I think is intellectually dishonest is having "amateur" championships and records (especially in the prime-of-life age groups) - because, when you think about it, it's simply the fastest of the people who choose not to race in the elite/pro category. Which is arbitrary. Most of them are fast enough to race elite/pro but choose not to. Most of them aren't really "amateur" either because they have sponsorships or partnerships or more support than many "pros."

So then it becomes a distinction that isn't about anything other than the fact that they haven't opted to take an elite license. Which doesn't feel like an accomplishment really.

It's not something other sports do either. Like running, you either win the 30-39 age group or you don't, or the 50-59, etc. So you're either the fastest (pro or not) or the fastest Masters, fastest Super Senior, etc. The amateur/age-group designation is artificial

Agreed on the part about keeping records.

But, as long as triathlete:

- doesn't do it in a way that it creates revenue, or

- does triathlon as a "side quest"

(to me) the person is an amateur.

There are a lot of amateurs that take it way too serious and they become fast, on their own expense and without any revenue from that result.

I kinda feel that he IS sponsored by Germany‘s Triathlete magazine, he works part time, 25 hrs, even in Germany is not fulltime…. But good gor him. And they referred to him as a father of 3 children….maybe some tiny progress….?

Btw, will the T-100 come out at St.Francis yachtclub? Same as me on sunday? You better cheer for me too on Sunday…lol
