I looked at the last 4 years of participant numbers for Western MA and I actually think the reason it is cancelled is because that number has been 1200 - 1600 each year compared with other races like Jones Beach that has over 3000. Two years of cancelled swims might be the public reason but there have been many examples of races in the Northeast (Timberman, Connecticut) where the race didn’t get enough registrants or couldn’t accommodate enough registrants to be a profitable endeavor.
Yeah, fair. They're probably related, like all the other races that had tough weather conditions also had a tough time getting people to register year over year. Probably depends on the contract with the city/region, etc.
Side point: I find it so annoying we can't make a 1500-person race work!
